Ditch Your SMART Goals. God Has a Better Plan.

Are you tired of setting the same goals every year only to end up right where you started, or worse, feeling further from your purpose?

Another January, another list. We’ve all been there, scribbling down SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. And while there’s nothing wrong with a well-structured plan (Proverbs 21:5 does remind us that "The plans of the diligent lead to profit"), I’ve found myself, year after year, achieving the target but missing the point. Hitting the goal but feeling hollow. Checking the box but losing connection to the why.

What if our goal-setting is starting from the wrong foundation? What if, instead of beginning with what we want to do, we started with who we are called to be?

This is the journey from resolution to revelation. It’s a move from a performance-driven checklist to a prayerful, purpose-driven framework rooted not in cultural metrics, but in our Kingdom identity.

The Problem with Starting with "What"

Let me tell you about my friend, Peace. A phenomenal achiever. Last year, her goals were impeccable: "Increase revenue by 20%," "Run a half-marathon," "Read 24 books." She nailed all three. Yet, when we caught up, she confessed a deep fatigue. "I did it all, but I feel like I was on a treadmill, going nowhere that truly matters." Her goals were SMART, but they were born from a place of "should" and comparison, not a deep, anchored sense of purpose. They were bricks without a blueprint.

Peace’s story isn’t unique. We often set goals based on who the world tells us to be more productive, more disciplined, more successful, rather than on the truth of who God says we are. We build on the shifting sand of external validation, and when the storms of life or the emptiness of achievement hit, it doesn’t stand (Matthew 7:26-27).

The Revelation Foundation: Who Does God Say You Are?

The entire process flips when we begin with revelation. Before a single goal is set, we must ask: What is my Kingdom identity?

This isn’t about your job title or marital status. It’s about the core, unshakable truths Scripture declares over you: You are a loved child of God (1 John 3:1). You are chosen, holy, and dearly loved (Colossians 3:12). You are a citizen of heaven (Philippians 3:20), an ambassador of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), and a co-heir with Jesus (Romans 8:17). Your intrinsic worth is not in what you produce, but in whose you are.

As I explore in my book, Awaken, discovering this divine identity, how God sees you beyond your failures, wounds, and past, is the critical first step to healing, unlocking true purpose, and aligning with God’s eternal agenda. You cannot sustainably build a purpose-driven life on a fractured identity.

A Prayerful, Purpose-Driven Framework

So, how do we practically move from this revelation to our resolutions? Here’s a framework to replace the first dash to goal-setting:

  1. Posture: From Planning to Prayerful Inquiry. Start on your knees, not with a pen. Bring a blank page to God. Ask, as Jesus did, "I only do what I see my Father doing" (John 5:19). Pray: "Father, what is on Your heart for my life this season? How do You want to shape my character? Where are You already at work around me that I can join?"

  2. Purpose: From Generic to God-Glorifying. Filter every potential goal through this lens: Does this serve only my kingdom, or does it advance God’s Kingdom? Does it allow me to love God and love others more fully (Matthew 22:37-39)? A goal to "get healthier" transforms from vanity to stewardship when its purpose is to "have the energy and vitality to serve my family and community well for the long haul."

  3. Person: From Achievement to Alignment. This is the heart of it. Ask: "To become the person God has called me to be, what needs to be nurtured, and what needs to be pruned?" Goals become the trellis that supports the growth of the vine. For example, if your identity is "peacemaker," a goal might be "complete a course in conflict resolution" or "practice daily pause-and-pray before responding in tension."

From Theory to Testimony

Remember Peace? This year, she started with identity. In prayer, she felt God affirming her as a "place of peace and creativity." Her goals shifted entirely. Instead of "Increase revenue by 20%," her goal became: "Cultivate a client environment of peace and creative collaboration, trusting God with the metrics." This led her to redesign her client onboarding process to be less transactional and more relational. The marathon goal? It became: "Steward my body as a temple through joyful movement, signing up for one scenic hike with friends per month to appreciate God’s creation." The shift was seismic. She’s now pursuing fruitfulness over mere productivity.

Your Sovereign Foundation & The Pathway to Consistent Ascension

This kind of goal-setting requires space, reflection, and a structure that points you back to your Sovereign purpose. To help you lay that foundation, I’ve created a free resource for you: The Sovereign Year Blueprint.

This guided workbook is your starting point. It’s a prayerful framework designed to help you:

  • Define your God-given vision from a place of identity, not insecurity.

  • Clarify the core values that will anchor your decisions.

  • Set first-quarter priorities that align with the eternal agenda.

But what happens after the blueprint is drawn? Vision can fade amidst the daily grind. Purpose can get clouded by pressure. This is why a blueprint needs a builder and a builder needs a proven process, ongoing support, and a trusted community.
