Is It True That We Serve All Our Life?

You serve all your life. Here’s what Jesus says about it.

CAREER CREATIVE

Let’s be honest for a moment.

A stay-at-home mom serves her husband, kids, and house chores.

A career woman or man serves their boss, clients, and company goals.

Even entrepreneurs serve their business, often until they break even, sometimes until it breaks them.

So yes. We serve all our life.

But here’s the question nobody asks:

What is it about serving that makes us so uncomfortable?

Why We Secretly Hate Serving

Most of us don’t mind serving if:

· We get recognized

· We chose the task

· It fits our strengths

But when serving feels forced, invisible, or misaligned, something changes inside us.

And that’s where SHAPE comes in.

SHAPE stands for:

· Spiritual gifts

· Heart (what you love)

· Abilities (what you’re good at)

· Personality (how you naturally function)

· Experience (what life has taught you)

When you serve in an area that doesn’t fit your SHAPE, you don’t just work harder, you hurt inside.

You feel unseen. Used. Resentful.

And the world’s reaction?

“Serving is for people with no options.”

We all want to be served.

We want the promotion, the rest, the recognition, the dream life.

But Jesus flips everything.

Jesus Didn’t Say “Serve” — He Said “Be a Servant”

That’s a massive difference.

It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, _ Matt 20:26 AMP

· “Serve” is an act. You can do it and hate every minute.

· “Be a servant” is an identity. It flows from who you are, not just what you do.

How is that even possible?

How can someone truly be a servant without feeling crushed?

Philippians 2:5-8 gives us the answer:

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…”

Jesus didn’t serve because He had to.

He served because of who He was — full of God’s Spirit and secure in His identity.

The only way you and I can do the same?

The Spirit of God in us.

Not by willpower. Not by pretending. But by allowing God’s character to shape our posture.

But What If You’re Stuck in a Job You Hate?

This is where real honesty matters.

You might be reading this and thinking:

“I’m not called to this job. This isn’t my SHAPE. I’m just waiting for my break.”

Good. Then see it as a means to an end.

You will eventually get the opportunity you desire.

The one that gives you your dream life. The one where you finally feel served and honored.

But here’s the test no one talks about:

Who have you become in the process?

· A hater?

· A complainer?

· A mismanager of small responsibilities?

Because if you can’t serve well in the waiting, you won’t lead well in the winning.

God blesses us — yes.

But He also tests us.

A Different Way: Service as Posture, Not Performance

So while you wait for your dream life:

· Wash the dishes like you’re washing Jesus’ feet.

· Answer that email like you’re serving the King.

· Fold the laundry, close the deal, change the diaper — not just as a task, but as a posture of heart.

You are not what you do.

You are who you become while doing it.

Final Reflection

Serve not just as an act, but a posture of heart.

Because the dream life isn’t just about what you get.

It’s about who you become before you get there.

A Question for You (Before You Close This Tab)

Where in your life right now is serving the hardest?

And what would change if you saw that place as your training ground — not your punishment?

---

Let’s Pray (or Simply Pause)

Lord, teach me to serve not out of obligation, but out of identity.

Where I’m bitter, soften me.

Where I’m waiting, strengthen me.

And while I wait for my dream life, make me someone worth blessing.

In Jesus Amen.

Now it’s your turn.
